Kicking the 2017 year off strong, we start our festival journey in the Southwest region of the country with Gem and Jam Music Festival. The eleventh annual festival located in the heart of Tucson, AZ takes place February 2nd-5th, and this year things are heating up more than ever. With masters of hip-hop-funk Gramatik, The Floozies, and Lotus headlining the festival, Arizona will host one of the most notoriously funk-worthy festivals of the year--and that’s not all that's in store for funk-lovers alike. Phish bassist Mike Gordon, several members of the String Cheese Incident, G-Jones, OPIUO, The Russ Liquid Test, and more fill out the lineup making the 2017 Gem and Jam fest one of the best they've ever had. The festival also includes both on and off-site camping each night, and for all of us Coloradans getting buried under snow, Gem and Jam sounds like the perfect place to trade up the bitter cold for the warmth, light, and music for a few days. Gem and Jam aspires to recreate an amalgamation of feel-sy funk and live music each year. Ever since its inaugural year in 2005, the festival has continually produced solid lineups complimented by artwork, and poetry. In 2015, the Emancipator ensemble, along with Michal Menert, Papadosio, Giraffage, and more gathered to headline the Arizona festival with an incredible turnout. As the festival has grown it's production and artist bookings have gotten better every year, and if they're not their yet, Gem and Jam may quickly rise to become Arizona’s largest festival.
So what’s in store for the weekend? Between massive on-location parking, Boutique Camping (yes, you heard it right: complete with mattress, linens, retro-reflective exterior which repels the hot rays of the Arizona sun, but keeps warm at night) and four days of jamming out to some of the biggest electro-funk artists in the world, Gem and Jam is a festival everyone should aim to experience at some point in their life. So if you haven't bought a ticket yet get yours now and get to Tuscan, AZ over the February 2-5th weekend. Once you're there you'll be able to escape the winter weather and enjoy some scorching tunes and minerals to warm your souls. See you there cultureheads!
